The High Elves
The High elves are those that are often depicted in fiction and fantasy stories. They are what is best termed as the "liberal" sect of the elven race. The High elves often fall in love with and marry humans producing half-elven offspring or associate with other elven races. Many travel the human lands in search of adventure, knowledge, understanding, and magic.
The most famous high elves that I can think of are Legolas, from J.R.R. Tolkien's
Lord of the Rings
, Link from the
Zelda
video games (yes, Link has pointed ears), and Laurana from the
DragonLance Chronicles
. All were free-spirited adventurers who influenced the fate of their fictional worlds.
In the
Forgotton Realms
books the Sun elves are the equivalent of the High elves. The Qualinesti of the
DragonLance
books are the honorable and free-thinking High elves of Krynn.
Because I am most familar with the
DragonLance
elves, I will use them as my example of High elven life.
The Qualinesti are divided into noble houses, then into clans, and lastly into family units. The ruling house, House Royale, produces the Speaker of the Sun who leads the Qualinesti nation. The first Speaker of the Sun was Kith-Kanan who was once the brother of the Silvanesti (Grey Elven) king. The house ranked right below that of the Speaker's is the Ambrodel's who forms the back bone of the military.
Like most High elven cities, Qualinost ("In Memory of Quinara"- the first elven queen), is located in a forest which borders both human and dwarvin lands. The forest of Mithranhana is home to the pink quartz city of the high elves and is guarded by troops of elven patrols.
The High elves take great pride in the craftsmanship and in fantasy worlds they are famous for their magical weapons and other such items. Like all elven-kin they have a natural affinity with bows and marksmanship.
I think I have pretty much exhausted that topic for now. :)
